We're in a funny county-owned campground near Sebastian Inlet, a barrier island on the Atlantic coast. It seems to be chock full of fishermen including one camper who comes from the northern mid-west every year towing a trailer with a freezer full of food. As he eats up his food, he replaces it with fish he catches here to bring back and eat at home. Many of the campers are long-term, coming back each year. I don't think I'd like that but you never know. The people beside us are from Marshfield and they come every November, fly home for Christmas and then come back until March. They have a great chocolate lab named Sadie; I'm sure I've run into her at Whitney and Thayer.
The most interesting of all, however, are a German couple traveling in a 45-year-old converted Mercedes ambulance. It is the most rugged looking vehicle I've ever seen. They load it on a freighter and then go by sea to other countries where they off-load the truck and travel around. On this trip, they've been to almost all of South and Central America, up to Alaska and back here to Florida. They've been to Afghanistan (before the Russians), Iraq and Iran (before the Shah) and Namibia and other countries in Africa. Currently, they've been out for two years and will soon drive to Baltimore where they will ship their camper home to Hamburg, Germany. They're hoping to be home in time to see their garden in springtime flower.
From here we plan to visit the Ocala National Forest. Two Toms have highly recommended it and then we'll head to the low country of the Carolinas and Virginia. Enough with this decadent life, we need some culture, we need some history.
